Grappling for a Good Cause

I normally save announcements about upcoming events for our sister site, the grappling & Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament direcory, but this is for a good cause, so I thought I would put it out there… – Caleb

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 – Wayne, NJ – Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships as well behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called Autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

Jonathan Cimins, the 5-year-old nephew of Brian Cimins, Founder and CEO of Grapplers Quest, was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old. Three years ago Cimins and his brother, Paul, created “Jonathan’s Autism Awareness Team” to help raise funds. The Team is currently comprised of 30 members and growing and has set a goal is to raise $10,000 for the 2009 Walk Now for Autism National Walk on Sunday, May 3rd at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey.

Grapplers Quest will be taking donations for Jonathan’s Team at two of their upcoming Martial Arts events including March 7th in Wildwood, New Jersey and March 21st-22nd in Del Mar, California at Anyone interested in joining or sponsoring Jonathan’s Team can e-mail Brian Cimins at All Team Members who raise $50 or more will get a Free T-Shirt.

Team donations will benefit Autism Speaks which helps fund research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism. Raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society will bring hope and knowledge to all of those who deal with the hardships of the disorder.
