Spectators at the Emirates Asian Super Cup 20007
We are all familiar with the famous biannual Abu Dhabi Combat Club submission grappling tournament, but did you know that Brazilian jiu-jitsu itself is building a healthy presence in the Arab world as well?
The city of Abu Dhabi, one of the two large cities in the United Arab Emirates, has become the home of Carlo Santos, a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu who has been there for years now. The Emirates have been generous in their support of Santos, who operates a BJJ academy that trains civilians and members of the military.
Over the weekend, the second annual Asian Super Cup was held at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club with 140 competitors from 33 countries. Total prize money was $30,000, so you can imagine how hard the competitors were fighting! The event used the formal rules of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and was sponsored by the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces Officers Club, Caracal, and Abu Haleeqa.
