Back in September we conveyed the story of Carlos Alberto de Oliveira, a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu who was detained at Dulles airport a day after the anniversary of September 11 when he reportedly made threatening gestures and attempted to open the door of an airplane in flight.
Things do not appear to have improved for de Oliveira. The Washington Post reports (free registration required) that de Oliveira attempted suicide yesterday in his cell in Northern Virginia. He was found hanging in his cell and rescued before he died.
After his initial arrest, evaluators at Central State Hospital in Virginia found nothing mentally wrong with de Oliveira, and he was given the green light to stand trial. The suicide attempt this week, which is said to be de Oliveira’s reaction to a judge’s denial of a plea bargain, has prompted another visit to the psychiatric facility.
