  1. Hi guys,

First of all, great show. I have an hour and fifteen minute one-way commute and listening to your podcast keeps me locked into the Jiu-Jitsu mindset and is WAY more interesting than any of the local radio programs here in Northern Neck Virginia. I particularly enjoy the shows where the philosophies of different GJJ and BJJ schools are compared and discussed (see Rorion, Rickson, and Ryron Gracie interviews as well as the BJJ etiquette interview).

As a big guy 6’0″ (250lbs), and cut down to (230lbs) in summer, I had, and often still have, the hardest time relaxing and letting my opponent feed me indicators. While this philosophy of waiting for indicators may be particular to GJJ and not necessarily BJJ (honestly I don’t know) I wonder if this concept is more of a novice versus experienced student issue rather than a GJJ versus BJJ issue? Could you guys discuss?

Also, keep up the good work on the podcasts as they keep the mighty 600,000 thirsty for more jiu-jitsu.

    Cheers,

    Daniel

  2. Dan & Kaleb,

As Jiu Jitsu journalists I would love to hear you guys cover the following:

    Much Respect,

    Preston

Rorion Gracie of the Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy in Torrance CA is currently a 9th degree, red belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (the IBJJF) just put out a new belt system, http://www.ibjjf.org/20130212_InfoPoster_Faixas_EN_A0.pdf -. The previous belt system for adults went as follows; white, blue, purple, brown, black, red/black, red. The new belt system has insert red/white between red/black and full red. So the new progression goes; white, blue, purple, brown, black, red/black, red/white, red.

Among their requirements are that the minimum age to receive a full red belt is 67 years of age. Rorion Gracie is wearing a red belt and is currently 61 years of age. Now, there is an abundance of content coming from Rorion’s academy talking about how there are many draw backs to sport BJJ, particularly how it is carried out now. They seem to be emphasizing more training for self defense, training to block and avoid punches and a de-emphasis on sport oriented moves. Their belt system for kids differs from the IBJJF system, https://www.graciekids.com/testingCenter.aspx?enc=NLJif+GoAj1XVZySw7xGTw==
Clearly, Rorion and his academy is not following the lead of the IBJJF, lead by his cousin, Carlos Gracie Jr., who is also the head of the Gracie Barra association.

I would like to know, I think the Jiu Jitsu world wants to know what the relationship is between Rorion and Carlos Jr., does Rorion intend to continue his current belt system? Did Carlos Jr. issue the new belt system with Rorion in mind, or perhaps with the intent to undercut his authority in the Jiu Jitsu world? Is there a severe fissure between the two, as there seems to be given the facts above? I want to hear statements from each. What do others think about the process of centralizing the art/sport of BJJ? Do people think that centralizing sports rules is positive? Is the centralization and formalization of techniques positive or negative? Is this the beginning of the end of the innovation of techniques? Is this the next step in the marginalization of BJJ in the world of MMA? Is Jiu Jitsu going to continue to emphasize more sport oriented techniques and therefore occupy a progressively more marginalized role in the fighting world?
