#96 First BJJ No-Gi World Championships
December 9, 2007

This coming Saturday the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation will take a firm step forward in its development by holding its first World Championship of No-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Carson, California. While submission grappling tournaments have been around for some time, this event caters to true Brazilian jiu-jitsu practiced without the gi and is going to probably be a bit unlike what you may be used to in regards to a submission grappling competitions.
We decided it would be good to speak with the IBJJF directly about what competitors that day can expect and what the event means for BJJ as a whole. The Event Staff Coordinator of the IBJJF, Mike Buckels, joins us and gives us a sneak peak of what to expect. Tune in, as there are likely some aspects to the event that are not what you are used to.
We will also give the results of the Super Challenge held in Sao Paulo yesterday, and review our effort to determine the Best BJJ Blog of the Year for 2007. Remember it’s up to you to vote for the best BJJ blog of 2007!

The promoters for the upcoming Super Challenge in Sao Paulo on December 8th have made the preliminary match ups public. The event is a premium submission grappling tournament with 16 competitors.
Bracket 1 :
Demian Maia vs. Bruno Bastos
Rafael Lovato Jr. vs. Luiz Teodoro, aka Big Mac
Tarsis Humphreys vs. Shiko Yamashita
Fabricio Werdum vs. Delson Heleno aka Pé de Chumbo
Bracket 2 :
Xande Ribeiro vs. David Avellan

The promoters plan on streaming the event live over the internet from their website, although at the time of this writing the site remains without exact details on the matter.

Super Challenge Update: Drysdale Out, Galvao In
November 20, 2007
The press squad of the Super Challenge, to be held December 8th in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has relayed a change in the lineup of the world-class grapplers who will be compete that day.
Robert Drysdale, who submitted the fan favorite Marcelo Garcia at this year’s Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Tournament, has been injured and will not be able to compete. The Brazilian-American has injured his knee.
His replacement will be another ADCC grappler, Andre Galvao. Galvao is a member of the Brazilan jiu-jitsu team Brasa, and currently is assisting Wanderlei Silva’s ground game for his fight against Chuck Liddell at UFC 79: Nemesis. Galvao, like many of his elite Brazilian jiu-jitsu peers, is reportedly working on making the transition from BJJ and grappling competition to mixed martial arts.
According to the promoters, the Super Challenge is to be broadcast over the internet from Sao Paulo so grappling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu fans from all over the world will be able to watch the action. The price for the broadcast has not been fixed but it is expected to be in the ballpark of $9.99.
Keep turned to The FightWorks Podcast, as this coming Sunday we will be presenting a conversation we recorded with the organizer of the Super Challenge, Paulo Vasconcellos.
Super Challenge of Submission Wrestling in Sao Paulo
November 13, 2007
Currently while mixed martial arts is enjoying an immense boost in popularity, the sport of submission grappling does not have a large, regular platform for its competitors to earn money. However in the past 18 months, event promoters have put together one-time shows which bring together the world’s best submission grapplers to compete for large prizes.
In the United States, the Professional Submission League has held two shows, and the United Kingdom has the 10K Ground Challenge. Brazil is making a significant contribution to the effort with the upcoming Super Challenge, to be held on December 8th.
The event will present sixteen competitors vying for large prizes. At the moment the list of elite grapplers who have agreed to participate includes:
- Robert Drysdale
- Fabricio Werdum
- Delson Heleno
- Alliance’s Tarsys Humphries
- Jeff Monson, who won the 10K Ground Challenge
- Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza
- Flavio Almeida
- Demian Maia, who recently won his debut UFC fight
- David Avellan
- Roger Gracie, who won the black belt division in his weight class and in the open division of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu world championships this year
It is rumored that Marcelo Garcia will participate as well.
Four different prizes will be available that evening:
- $15,000 for first place
- $8,000 for second place
- $4,000 for third place
- $1,000 for the fastest submission
Rickson Gracie will be present as the event’s rules director as well as technical commentator. To ensure that there is no stalling and that the athletes work for submissions, new rules have been implemented. In an email with the promoter, we learned that:
- If a fighter put his opponent in a real submission situation and keep the position for more than 5 seconds it will result on 3 points even if the opponent scape from the position after that.
- Sweeps, side mount and inversions will earn 1 point. Mount and taking the back are worth 2 points.
The organizers of the event state that the competition will be available on internet pay-per-view.
The Super Challenge will be held in the Club Athletico Paulistano, which is the same location that the Brazilian team-based MMA league, the MTL has held its two events.
