Randy Couture vs. Kurt Angle at the next Professional Submission League?

The FightWorks Podcast confirmed today with the Professional Submission League that they are “still working” on a submission grappling match between MMA legend Randy Couture and Kurt Angle.

Couture’s been involved in a legal tussle with the UFC since October 2007 when he resigned from his position with the organization as both a fighter and a spokesperson. At the moment it appears that he will be waiting until that contract with the UFC expires before pursuing another mixed martial arts fight. At the last PSL event Couture competed against BJJ world champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, an encounter which ended in a draw.

Kurt Angle won the 1996 Summer Olympics gold medal in freestyle wrestling as a heavyweight, and became very popular as a professional wrestler since then. There have been numerous mentions of his interest in crossing over to mixed martial arts from pro wrestling in the fashion of Brock Lesnar.

Currently the PSL is hammering out other details regarding the next PSL event, and is seeking more sponsors. There are no details on a timeframe for the next event. The PSL’s prior two submission grappling events, which took place in May and November 2006 received popular acclaim from competitors, commentators, and fans.

Today we’re going to focus on The Professional Submission League’s X-Mission, which took place on Saturday in Culver City, Los Angeles and have the following interviews for you:

  • Kron Gracie discusses his encounter with Andy Wang (4-0, Gracie)
  • Rafael Lovato Jr. talks about his match against Roberto “Tuca” Camargo (7-0 Lovato)
  • Jeff Glover goes over his match with Shane Rice (3-0 Glover)
  • A frustrated Vinicius “Pezao” Magalhaes laments his loss to Vladimir Matyushenko (0-1 Matyushenko)
  • Jake Shields expresses his surprise to being tapped for the first time in competition ever by Marcelo Garcia (Garcia by guillotine)

Lastly, On The Mat.com’s Gumby and I will give some thoughts on the evening. During our conversation I’ve inserted a slideshow of the match between Randy Couture and Ronaldo “Jacare” de Souza, so you can watch that on your color or video iPod and in iTunes in the viewer pane. Lastly, we’ll go over some listener mail before wrapping up the show.
