Pac Sub Results

While we had the Grapplers Quest on the east coast today, on the opposite side of the USA Hawaii hosted the Pacific Submission Grappling Championships, aka the Pac Subs at the Blaisdell Exhibition Center.
Here are some quick results of the superfights that took place today:
- Rafael Lovato Jr. (Saulo Ribeiro) defeated Niko Vitale (808 Fight Factory) by way of the north-south choke made popular by Jeff Monson against Brandon Lee Hinkle at UFC 57.
- Jeff Glover (Paragon) defeated Kyle Sukehira (Ka-Mole Jiu-Jitsu) by a score of 5-2.
- Mike Fowler (LIMAA) defeated Marcio Silva (Central Oahu Jiu-Jitsu) with a choke from the mount.
- Cindy “Sleeper” Hales (Gracie Barra Seattle) defeated Gabriela “Gabi” Bermudez (Gracie Humaita) after Gabi had her back taken in the final moments.
UPDATE! Sunday June 28th, 9:40PM Pacific. Results from Sunday:
- Scott Bieri (Cobra Kai) defeats Joel Tudor (BJJ Revolution /Rodrigo Medeiros) on points. The score is 3-0 after Bieri passed Tudor’s guard.
- Jeff “The Snowman” Monson (ATT) defeats Abraham “Kumu” Cambra (Grappling Unlimited) by rear naked choke.
- Simpson Go (Cobra Kai) is defeated by Luke Hacker (Longman) 2-0 in overtime.
- Gabi Bermudez and Cindy Hales competed again and Hales won by a score of 2-0 on a takedown.

Grapplers Quest No Gi Pro Results

Today in New Jersey Grapplers Quest held its All Star Pro Grappling Championship as part of its two-day weekend of competition in Morristown, New Jersey. Saturday, which was devoted to no-gi matches, saw pretty high end competitors from the United States, Canada, and Brazil vie for their share of $6,000 in cash prizes.
Here are the limited results that we were able to gather courtesy of FightWorks Podcast correspondent Bruce Hoyer.
Womens
- Ana Caronlina Vidal won the lightweight division
Mens
- Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles (Alliance) won the lightweight division on points over Justin Rader (Lovato Jiu-Jitsu).
- Lucas Lepri (Alliance) defeated Rick Macauley on points in a controversial match to take the cruiserweight division.
- David Branch (Renzo Gracie) won the cruiserweight division on points over Derek Piccinich.
- Rick Migliarese lost the heavyweight division to an unknown opponent. I’ll update this when I find out his opponent.
Tarsis Humphries was present but did not compete.

This will be pretty fast and furious (forgive the reference to the movie!), but we’re here in Los Angeles at the Pyramid reporting live from the 2008 BJJ Mundials! As with last year, perhaps the best way to find out how your favorite grappler is doing will be to do a CTRL+F to Find their name.

- The black belt open division is being decided by committee. At the moment as there are no official rankings a discussion of the largest BJJ camps ensures fair and balanced brackets. Present were Saulo Ribeiro, Fabio Gurgel, Marcio Feitosa, Demian Maia, Mauricio Motta Gomes, and others.
- Relson Gracie’s son Rhalan yesterday was disqualified after applying a kneebar to an opponent. Rhalan claims that he was told kneebars were allowed by an official. It turns out that the “official” was the person responsible for checking gis, and also flat mistaken.
- Big names in attendance who are not competing: Josh Barnett, Royler Gracie, Demian Maia, Robert Drysdale, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
Purple Belt Mens
Neiman Gracie is taking on Omar Santiago. He is being coached by Renzo Gracie and Kayron Gracie.
Santiago was working some x-guard on Neiman but he is now defending an armbar attempt in Neiman’s guard.

Ryan Hall just stepped on the mats against a very large opponent from Team Megaton.
Several minutes into the match, the score is still 0-0 across the board in Ryan Hall’s match.
When the timer sounds, it’s still 0-0 for Ryan Hall’s match, and the judges award the match to his opponent.

Nyjah Easton was holding Jasmin Sewgobind in her guard when I last checked but I am unsure of the outcome of their match.

Now reengaging, Galvao attempts to pull guard but Roger passes immediately. Roger gets points for takedown and passing. Roger is now on top in half guard.
Every eye in the Pyramid is on the two, as Roger gets another two points for passing.
Roger nearly gets mount but Galvao escapes. Roger gets an advantage.
Roger now has Galvao in a body triangle from the back. Galvao’s situation worsens.
Roger is sinking the choke from behind on Galvao, but Galvao escapes for the time being back into Roger’s mount.
Roger Gracie is going for the armbar as time runs out and defeats Andre Galvao by points!!!
Xande Ribeiro (UNIJJ) is taking the mat against Gabriel Vella (Alliance).
Controversy erupts as it looked like Vella just tapped to an armbar by Xande, but they are stood back up again.
Xande gets the takedown, now working from half guard.
The action moves out of bounds and they restart in the middle standing.
The score is now 2-0 in Xande’s favor. Xande also has three advantages and Vella has one.
The two have been exchanging takedown attempts, and they are given a quick second to recompose their gis. The action resumes from standing in the center again.

Rickson Gracie, Kron’s father, comes to the sidelines and whispers in his son’s ear. As Kron leaves the mat, he is rewarded with warm cheers from the crowd.

Otavio Souza and Thiago Alves (Barbosa JJ) are getting ready to begin.
The score continues to be 0-0 between Souza and Alves.
Xande Ribeiro just tapped his opponent by armbar.
The score is now 2-2 between Alves and Souza. Souza is winning on advantages. The two have restarted standing.

As time runs out, Sergio does not tap and is declared the winner on points.
Last and final update: 06:57 PM I haven’t eaten anything but a granola bar today. (I also brought a ripe pear in my pocket which quickly exploded the first time I sat down. You’d think I’d know better!) It’s time for some grub and then back to the hotel to begin work on tomorrow’s show!

Xtreme Couture Submission Grappling Tourney in June

Today Randy Couture’s Las Vegas training facility Xtreme Couture sent out a notice to the press announcing their first ever Submission Grappling Tournament on June 14th at 7pm.
The tournament will consist of just eight elite fighters, all under 200 pounds. The organizers anticipate also offering one or two superfights for the spectators to watch in between the semifinals and the final tournament match. Competitors in the superfights do not need to be under 200 pounds.
Tickets to the event, which begins at 7pm, are $20 and will go on sale that evening. In speaking with Xtreme Couture representative Sean O’Heir, it is “almost definite” that the event will be broadcast over the internet for those who are not available to make it in person.
Interestingly, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu World Championships (”Mundials”) will be held in Los Angeles just one week prior, so there could be some folks in the United States who might not otherwise be available to participate. Las Vegas will actually be hosting a USA Wrestling submission grappling World Team trials event that very day as well, so submission grappling fans can head over to Xtreme Couture that same evening and enjoy the matches.

Randy Couture vs. Kurt Angle at the next Professional Submission League?

The FightWorks Podcast confirmed today with the Professional Submission League that they are “still working” on a submission grappling match between MMA legend Randy Couture and Kurt Angle.
Couture’s been involved in a legal tussle with the UFC since October 2007 when he resigned from his position with the organization as both a fighter and a spokesperson. At the moment it appears that he will be waiting until that contract with the UFC expires before pursuing another mixed martial arts fight. At the last PSL event Couture competed against BJJ world champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, an encounter which ended in a draw.
Kurt Angle won the 1996 Summer Olympics gold medal in freestyle wrestling as a heavyweight, and became very popular as a professional wrestler since then. There have been numerous mentions of his interest in crossing over to mixed martial arts from pro wrestling in the fashion of Brock Lesnar.
Currently the PSL is hammering out other details regarding the next PSL event, and is seeking more sponsors. There are no details on a timeframe for the next event. The PSL’s prior two submission grappling events, which took place in May and November 2006 received popular acclaim from competitors, commentators, and fans.

Saturday the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation held its inaugural no-gi World Championships in Los Angeles. It was a day full of surprises and although some of the big names in the sport of BJJ were not present, the event was full of excitement and very high-end jiu-jitsu.

- Bill Cooper, who had an amazing debut in black belt competition
- Jeff Monson, who won the black belt absolute division
- Franjinha, Bill Cooper’s coach at Paragon Jiu-Jitsu who won his own division

BJJ and MMA Connection Evident at the No-Gi Worlds

The overlap that exists between mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu was evident yesterday in the number of MMA fighters who were present at the first-ever BJJ No-gi World Championships as competitors and spectators.
Just a quick run-down of personalities from the MMA world who were there:
- Jeff “The Snowman” Monson (UFC, Pride, etc) - won the black belt no-gi absolute division. Monson also grabbed the silver medal in the Ultra Heavyweight black belt division.
- Jess Liaudin (UFC) - competed in the purple belt open division and was submitted by a head-arm triangle from Jason Parry.
- Vinicius Magalhaes (Gracie Fighting Championship) - won the gold medal in the Super Heavyweight division for black belts.
- Fabio Leopoldo (IFL) - captured the silver medal in the Heavyweight black belt division.
- Adam Lynn (IFL) - competed as a brown belt but I don’t have any results for him.
- Diego Saraiva (UFC)- competed but I don’t have any results for him.
- Luke Stewart (Strikeforce)- lost to Marcel Louzado for the Middle-Heavyweight championship for black belts.
- Renato “Babalu” Sobral (UFC, EliteXC, etc) - spectated.
- Daniel Moraes (Gracie Fighting Championships) - grabbed the silver medal in the middleweight black belt championship.
- Ginelle Marquez (EliteXC) - won the women’s purple belt lightweight division.
- Andy Wang (UFC) - competed in the black belt division but I don’t have any results for him.
- Kevin Casey (Hero’s) - spectated. I spoke with Kevin and he said that he may compete in MMA in Asia again in mid-2008.
- Josh Barnett (UFC, Pride, etc) - spectated, coached Ginele Marquez.
- Joe Rogan - Okay so Joe didn’t compete nor is he an MMA fighter, but you see the connection. He is a brown belt in BJJ though. Keep tuned to the FightWorks Podcast for a quick conversation with the UFC commentator about the No-Gi World Championship.

I just got back in from Los Angeles after watching the first-ever Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu No-gi World Championship. It is late and I need to catch some zzzz’s but here are some quick blurbs about the event, in no particular order.
- Bruno Paulista beat Jeff Monson for the Ultra Heavyweight black belt championship.
- Pablo Popovitch beat Daniel Moraes Correia for the middleweight black belt championship.
- Jeff Glover beat Daniel Aguiar for the Lightweight black belt championship.
- Roberto “Tuca” Camargo beat Fabio Leopoldo for the Heavyweight black belt championship.
- Vinicius Magalhaes beat Cristiano “Titi” Lazzari for the Super Heavyweight black belt championship.
- Marcel Louzado beat Luke Stewart for the Mid-Heavyweight black belt championship.
- Rubens “Cobrinha” Maciel Charles beat Shane Rice for the featherweight black belt championship.
- Jeff Monson beat Bill Cooper for the black belt absolute division 2-0. On his way to the silver medal, Cooper submitted both Wellington “Megaton” Diaz and Wilson Reis, and out-pointed Cristiano “Titi” Lazzari. Keep in mind that Bill Cooper has only been a black belt for two weeks!
