Support Our Soldiers

July 27, 2007

It’s unusual for me to post anything here that isn’t Brazilian jiu-jitsu or mixed martial arts-related, but there are two organizations I want to introduce you to, in hopes that you’ll see fit to support them with a donation.

  • Heroes 4 Heroes: “We work directly with members of the United States Military, corporations, and the general public to provide portable media to active troops in order to boost morale and keep our men and women in uniform culturally tuned-in. We gather, organize, and send entertainment material such as comic books, DVDs, CDs, books, magazines, MP3 players, and game systems to our Heroes.”
  • The Wounded Warrior Project: “Our mission is to raise the awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.”

Regardless of your stance on the war, the soldiers in our armed forces are regular guys like you and me, and are good people deserving our support. Please take a moment to check out the above sites and see if you can assist.

Something Big is On the Way…

June 12, 2007

No, we’re not talking about Brock Lesnar’s entrance into mixed martial arts. (We’re still not sure what to make of that whole thing). Keep your eyes out for an announcement from The FightWorks Podcast regarding a new offering that we’ll have ready for you as soon as we can…

No Better Time to Reach Out to The FightWorks Podcast

May 22, 2007

Why? Because I have a new email addy that is stiff and uncomfortable. I need you guys’ help in breaking it in.

My older address, caleb@fightworks.net, appears to be on every spammer’s list in the world. It’s gotten so bad that legitimate mail from listeners of The FightWorks Podcast are getting placed into my spam folder in my mail client just by virtue of having been mailed to that email addy. (If you’ve sent me something and I never got back to you, I apologize. I did my best to make sure none were lost, but I could’ve missed some.) I know, I know - just by leaving my email address in text as I’ve done in this post is what made the problem so bad in the first place. At this point, I’m over it. Time to move on!

So, to keep a reliable line of communication between us I have set up a new email addy, as shown on the right hand side of this page, just below the links which allow you to subscribe to FightWorks Podcast news by email. (It’s embedded in an image to keep the spammers’ spiders from coming to the site here, finding it, and adding it to more lists). It also makes more sense to use this new address as it matches the web domain where we post our news and should be less easy to mix up.

As always, feel free to reach out using that addy to reach Dan or me. We’re always interested in hearing about:

  • Your opinion of how we’re doing
  • Ideas or suggestions for guests here on the show
  • If you’ve got a product or service that you would like to put in front of our audience, we can help
  • Want us to give a shout out to a friend who just was promoted to a new belt in BJJ? Tell us!

Covering ADCCs

Preview of Sunday’s Episode of The FightWorks Podcast

May 11, 2007

Stay close by so you can download this coming Sunday’s show. On it we’ll play part of a conference call with Royce Gracie, who is scheduled to fight Kazushi Sakuraba at the upcoming EliteXC show at the Los Angeles Colisseum on June 2nd.

In our ongoing quest to bring you Brazilian jiu-jitsu and grappling news from around the globe, cohost Dan and I also speak with Riccardo “Baleia” Ammendolia, who gives a great run down of the scene in the beautiful country to the north, Canada. Baleia is a brown belt in BJJ, has organized tourneys up there, and in general is on top of the combat sports scene as much as anyone. Don’t miss it!

What do you want to know about the ADCCs?

May 1, 2007

As many listeners to The FightWorks Podcast already know, cohost Dan and I will be on hand in New Jersey this weekend reporting on location at the 2007 ADCC World Submission Grappling Championships to bring you all, the 600,000, some great coverage.

Would you like us to talk to Jeff Monson? How about Norwegian Jon Olav Einemo, who has taken the place of Ricardo Arona and Dean Lister to challenge Roger Gracie in the superfight on Sunday? Keep in mind that the 6′6″, 220 pound Einemo beat Roger Gracie the last time they met at ADCC in 2003!

Whatever it is you’d like to see or learn about, you can contact us at the email address on the right side of this page. We look forward to hearing from you!

If you see us there, don’t hesitate to introduce yourself to us and say hello. For those who don’t know what Dan and I look like, you can find headshots of us by clicking on the About link in the upper right of this page.

Guest Appearance on FightOpinion.com

April 14, 2007

While I doubt many of the fans of The FightWorks Podcast haven’t visited FightOpinion.com and checked out the educated MMA analysis by Zach Arnold and the rest of the gang, if you’ve never visited, you should. Like The FightWorks Podcast, they’ve got a weekly audio show and it just so happens that I was invited onto their latest episode of the show, The Funeral of Pride. In the segment where I appear, we discuss last week’s UFC Ultimate Fight Night and UFC 69. Later MMA fighter Jonathan Goulet appears as a guest on the show. If FightOpinion’s rss feed isn’t in your feed reader, make sure it is!

BJJ and MMA Photography

April 2, 2007

You can always tell when a photo posted on this site is one that I took by the blur and general crappy quality of the shot. And those are the good ones. You should see the 500 I discarded before deciding on the ones that I wind up posting.

Which is why I want to thank Alicia Anthony for her help here on the site. Alicia’s been shooting BJJ tournaments, seminars, and mixed martial arts events for several years now, and is always very easy to work with. You can check out her photos at Alicia Photos. Her latest shoot from the IFL Show in Los Angeles came out great.

I’m lucky to have such a great resource that complements the work that we do here on the podcast, and the community’s lucky because you can get some great tourney shots from her. Thanks Alicia!

A Clarification on Our Listenership and The Mighty 600,000

March 24, 2007

As many of “The 600,000″ know, we refer to our fan base here on The FightWorks Podcast as, well, “The 600,000″. The name came about way back in one of our earliest episodes, somewhere before Episode 10, when we joked about having 60,000 listeners. A listener wrote to us and called us out on it, and we joked that we were mistaken - we’d left off a zero and it was actually 600,000!

Ever since then we’ve called our listeners “The 600,000″. Of course we were only playing in both cases. I don’t think there are 600,000 people who take part in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in the whole planet. I could be wrong. But that is a ton of people.

It came to our attention recently that there may be folks out there who take us literally when we refer to The 600,000 that way, thinking that there really are 600,000 listeners to our show. So, just for the record: we don’t have that many listeners. We have a lot. But not that many. :)

New Host for Our Site; Good Riddance Blogger!

February 21, 2007

As you may have noticed, we’ve moved away from our old home on the web on Blogger.com. We will no longer be producing new content there. So if any of you out there have ever linked to us at that domain, it’d be great if you could change those links to their updated address at thefightworkspodcast.com.

So long Blogger! I won’t miss you! The unexplained outages were really too much. I know, I really shouldn’t complain considering it was free, but when anything is a Google product I expect more from it.

I’m not sure if all of our comments ported over when I made the import to the new host. I apologize if we lost your comment along the way!

As you may have also noticed by the banner at the top of the site, I am not what you’d call a graphics guru! If anyone out there has some design skills, shoot me a note using caleb @ fightworks DOT net!

Next Episode on Sunday… Cesar Gracie

January 25, 2007

Co-host of The FightWorks Podcast Dan and I spoke today with the very busy Cesar Gracie, who spent some time discussing his arrival in the United States way back when, his very sought-after stable of fighters, and his take on today’s very busy MMA scene. Though Dan and I asked Cesar to make sure he spoke up before the tape started rolling, Cesar was a little on the lower side of volume, shall we say (didn’t seem to work for Yamasaki either!).

In other news, On The Mat’s Gumby is heading to Portugal for the CBJJ European Championships at this very moment! The lineup of competitors is very exciting, and includes the likes of Rafael Lovato Jr., Xande Ribeiro, Lagarto, and more. Keep an eye on On The Mat.com for news on that soon.
