Coffee with the Family, 2011 BJJ World Championship Edition!

Hey! Are you going to attend the 2011 IBJJF World Championship in Long Beach? If you will be there, make sure you get up early and stop by the Long Beach Marriott that morning to grab some coffee with us!

When: 06/05/2011 7am-8am

Where: Breakfast Lounge inside Long Beach Marriott 4700 Airport Plaza Drive Long Beach, California 90815

Why: Talk about results so far from the BJJ Mundials, make a prediction or two about the Absolute divisions to follow later that day, hang out with extended members of the BJJ family

This is something we’ve been doing for a few years now. I believe our first time was at the 2008 BJJ Pan Am Championships!

In fact we even got an email last week asking if we were going to get together:

I was wondering if you are planning to have a breakfast this year before the Worlds on Sunday the 5th. I will be attending the event and I’m a long time listener of the show. If its possible I would love to come shake your hand and talk about Jiu Jitsu with you and some other listeners. I’m getting really excited to see the Worlds although I’m a bit bummed that Xande is not competing and Roger may not make it either. Talk to you guys soon, and I’ll be looking for some info on the breakfast on the next show.

Alex

I know this time around it’s a little early. Normally we would not gather at 7am, but because I have to be “on deck” for the broadcast with Budovideos.com/online at nine, 7am is the best way to go without rushing things.

Let’s Grab Coffee Sunday at the 2010 BJJ World Championships

The 2010 BJJ World Championship is this coming weekend! It’s going to be very busy, with our live blog of Saturday and our appearance on Sunday’s free video stream of the action. But one thing we love about these events is the opportunity to get face to face with the Mighty 600,000.

Here’s the deal: stop in and grab a coffee with us from 8 to 8:45am at the Starbucks Cafe & Lobby Lounge inside the Long Beach Marriott at 4700 Airport Plaza Drive in Long Beach. This is the hotel that the IBJJF had hooked up with a special rate for BJJ Mundial competitors, and it’s just down the street from the 2010 Jiu-Jitsu World Championship so I hope it’s pretty convenient for people.

Please stop in and say hello. It’s really rewarding to put faces to the Mighty 600,000.

Don’t worry, we won’t be there long enough for you to miss any of the black belt action that day, which begins at 10am. But this way we get to connect with the Family a bit, generate some content for our next show, and caffeinate before another long day of BJJ reporting! See you there!

Coffee with the Family Saturday Morning at the Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship

The 2010 Pan BJJ Championship is this coming weekend! Here at the FightWorks Podcast, we are as giddy as can be. And anxious. And mentally preparing ourselves for the marathon of jiu-jitsu coverage (including Sunday’s live stream of the finals)! But one thing we love about these events is the opportunity to get face to face with the Mighty 600,000.

Here’s the deal: stop in and grab a coffee with us from 8 to 9am at the Starbucks inside the Irvine Marriott at 18000 Von Karman Avenue in Irvine. This is the hotel that the IBJJF had hooked up with a special rate for Pan competitors, and it’s just down the street from the Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship so I hope it’s pretty convenient for people.

If you’re up for it, we’ll record audio of you telling us who you think will win the 2010 black belt absolute division champion the next day. Later we will draw a name at random among the other folks who correctly guessed the 2010 black belt absolute division champion and send the winner a FightWorks Podcast gi patch!

Even if you have no prediction, please stop in and say hello. It’s really rewarding to put faces to the Mighty 600,000.

Don’t worry, we won’t be there long enough for you to miss any of the black belt action that day, which begins at 3pm. But this way we get to connect with the Family a bit, generate some content for our next show, and caffeinate before another long day of BJJ reporting! See you there!

p.s. You can recognize me because I’ll be the guy with a scar on his knee and a brace on his foot!

Dinner with the Family – September 7

Is there ever a bad time to talk about Brazilian jiu-jitsu? I suppose it’s not good to bring it up during most people’s funeral services, in a business meeting, or in that argument with your significant other where they are complaining that you spend too much time doing jiu-jitsu.

The rest of the time, it is all we want to talk about. And although at this very moment I am away on my honeymoon with my lovely new bride, you can bet I am thinking about BJJ when she leaves the room. So why not have another one of our FightWorks Podcast Dinners with the Family when I return? That way we can catch up and blather about BJJ and the most recent issues we’re having in training, BJJ videos we’ve seen on YouTube, or tournaments we’ve been to or will go to soon. It’ll be just like our Dinner with the Family we had back in May.

So come on out! Don’t be shy! You’ll know us when you see us – it’s easy to spot jiu-jitsu people.

If you can make it, please let us know using the Google Event Box thingy above so I’m not the only one!

Pre-Mundials Coffee Last Sunday

A few days before the 2009 BJJ World Championship, I posted a note asking if anyone wanted to get together for a coffee. About six or seven members of the Mighty 600,000, some from as far away as North Carolina, came for a quick cup of joe and we got to chat about all the great jiu-jitsu we had seen on Saturday.

I just wanted to get together post a quick note to say how much I appreciated getting together with you guys. I get emails from folks sometimes and the occasional voicemail on our toll-free line (877-247-4662), but it’s really a pleasure to meet our humble BJJ internet radio show’s listeners face to face. It makes all the hard work very rewarding.

Muinto obrigado to Ross for taking the photos, more of which can be seen here.

Looking forward to next time!

BJJ Dinner with the Family – May 19

I was thinking the other day that it would be fun to get together with friends once in a while, sit down, grab some food, and oh, I don’t know, talk about, oh, let’s see… jiu-jitsu. There’s no time like the present, so if you are in the San Diego area, come on out to grab a bite to eat and to talk shop with other members of the Mighty 600,000, aka the Family.

We’ve got tons to talk about – I don’t need to list them all as you are probably talking about them already, but: the Mundials are coming up (hello!!!!), there is the ongoing gentleman’s agreement controversy, we all have injury stories to sympathize with each other about… The list goes on forever.

I’d like to make this a semi-regular thing in the future. So come on out on Tuesday! Don’t be shy! You’ll know us when you see us – it’s easy to spot jiu-jitsu people.

If you can make it click “I’m going” in the Google Event Box above so I’m not the only one!
