BJJ Blog of the Year (Non) Update

I mention this in the new show we have coming for you on Sunday, but I wanted to also put it in writing here on the site: despite what I said over the summer, there will be no BJJ Blog of the Year contest in 2010. The same things that are keeping me from putting out shows as regularly as we used to are keeping me from putting together a legitimate BJJ Blog of the Year contest.

Unfortunately to do it right, I have to coordinate judges, prizes, get voting going, and there are a handful of things going on that are keeping me from those. So I have to tap on this one. I’m really sorry because I know it can be a lot of fun and it certainly is an opportunity for those really entertaining and fun BJJ bloggers out there to get some recognition they deserve because they really do work hard all year.

But, the one thing I can do is once again offer the list of BJJ blogs that I read and/or scan every day. One of the missions we’ve had here at The FightWorks Podcast has always been to provide some BJJ content for you so you can feed the itch for BJJ when you are not able to be out on the mats and by following the instructions below you will have a lot of fresh, new, and fun BJJ content delivered right to you all day long. Some of the authors are very high end jiu-jitsu champions, and some are white belts. (And a lot of them are female, and honestly I think sometimes they make better bloggers! You be the judge.)

So, here goes.

I’m attaching something to this post called an OPML file. Basically it’s a file you upload (“import”) into Google Reader. (I can’t promise it will work in other readers.) This OPML file contains the RSS feeds of more than 300 BJJ blogs. Here’s what you do:

  1. Download the OPML File of BJJ Blogs Here and save it to your desktop.
  2. Open Google Reader.
  3. Click Manage Subscriptions in the bottom left of Google Reader.
  4. Now find Import/Export and upload the file you just saved to your desktop.

After you import this file, Google Reader will display the contents of the newly updated BJJ blog whenever any of these BJJ bloggers write something new!

Don’t worry, not all of the 300+ blogs put out new content every day. Some come and go, and a few have even mostly gone silent. In any case you can use Google Reader to nuke the ones you don’t like, and keep the ones you enjoy.

So while there’s no BJJ Blog of the Year Contest (I really am sorry), hopefully this helps the community by giving BJJ Bloggers some new readers and also giving the greater community lots of great jiu-jitsu content to read.

(And for those who are wondering whether we’ll do the random drawing gi giveaway from for contributors of Tournament Review Tuesday pieces, that’s still a go. That’s very easy to pull off. Stay tuned…)

Best BJJ Blog of 2008: ShogunHQ.com

trophies

The results are in! 182 voters from across the globe have voiced their opinions, and declared Denmark’s ShogunHQ.com the Best BJJ Blog of 2008!

In last year’s piece on the Best BJJ Blog of 2007, I mentioned how important I think it is that the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community take advantage of blogging as a means of fostering an online community that mirrors the great camaraderie that we feel when we are out there on the mats training jiu-jitsu. I think the fact that there were around thirty nominations for the 2008 award is evidence that the community of BJJ bloggers online is growing, which is awesome.

Congratulations to ShogunHQ.com’s Christian Graugart and to our second place winner, Luke Chaya of BJJ-Asia.com.

Here are finalists that our judges returned from the list of approximately 30 nominees!

When voting, please consider: our goal is to determine the Brazilian jiu-jitsu blog that makes the biggest cultural contribution to the rest of the online BJJ community.

The biggest reward of winning this coveted award is of course, being able to say that you had the Best BJJ Blog of the Year. But there are some other sweet prizes this year:

BJJ Blog of the Year 2008 Contest

Well I mentioned that we would have news on our annual BJJ Blog of the Year Contest this week and I meant it! I am particularly excited about the big leaps we are making in this year’s contest over those from previous years.

As last year, the Mighty 600,000 (that is YOU!) will vote in a poll that we will post here on the site to determine the winner. However, because the number of Brazilian jiu-jitsu blogs out there has grown so much in the last year, I expect we will receive a lot of nominations and I don’t want to put a list of a gazillion options up there. I think we can narrow the candidates down to a handful of really good blogs that you can vote on. How will we determine our final candidates? Judges.

OUR JUDGES

  • BJJ purple belt & Southern California’s busiest Brazilian jiu-jitsu, submission grappling and MMA photographer, AliciaPhotos.com‘s Alicia Anthony!

BJJ Blogs I Read

Last week I posted a note about our annual Best Brazilian jiu-jitsu Blog of the Year. I thought to myself, “Why not share the blogs I keep an eye on so others can see if they like them too?”

So, I’m attaching something to this post called an OPML file. Basically it’s a file you upload (“import”) into Google Reader. (I can’t promise it will work in other readers.) This OPML file contains the RSS feeds of more than 60 BJJ blogs.

The one thing all of these bloggers have in common is a love for BJJ. There’s a lot of different styles of writing in here, as folks share their jiu-jitsu experiences in their personal ways. Among the list are BJJ bloggers from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America.

Now don’t get me wrong – I’m not endorsing any of these or saying they’re great. I’m sharing for the sake of sharing.

Take this list, taste some of the blogs on there and see what you think. Keep the ones you like, and ditch the ones you don’t. At a minimum you should have a better idea of how people experience BJJ in other places around the world. At best, you may make some new friends who share your love for jiu-jitsu!

If there are some you know about that are not on this list, definitely share it by posting it in the comments below!

Note to BJJ Bloggers

You remember that we hold an annual Best Brazilian jiu-jitsu Blog of the Year, right? At The FightWorks Podcast we firmly believe that we all benefit from the cultural contribution that BJJ bloggers offer, and every December, a Best BJJ Blog of the Year is announced.

“But Caleb, it’s only July! Why are you going on about something that doesn’t happen until December?”

Relax, family. It’s important because I see the quality of BJJ blogs out there dramatically better than in the past already despite only being 7 months into the year. There are men and women all over the world who’ve been sharing and contributing their BJJ stories, experiences, thoughts, and interviews and I want them to do what they can to best position themselves for later this year.

Also, if you have a BJJ blog and want to be on our radar here for consideration for December honors, please post a comment below so we know you’re out there! We have a pretty good list of BJJ blogs in our RSS reader here at FightWorks Podcast headquarters, but I don’t want any good ones to go unnoticed!

Best BJJ Blog of 2007: Prancing and Sucking

trophies

It’s official! We have a winner. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu community has spoken and declared that the best BJJ blog of 2007 is Val Worthington’s blog called Prancing and Sucking! Congratulations Val. Courtesy of Grapplers Quest, you win two GQ DVDs which will be sent out in short order.

Here’s how the top three candidates fared:

  1. Prancing and Sucking, bjjvisionquest2006.blogspot.com – 389 votes
  2. Aesopian, aesopian.com – 368 votes
  3. John Will’s BJJ Australia, bjj-australia.blogspot.com – 194 votes

Aesopian will receive one GQ DVD as well for coming in second place. Sorry John, there was no prize for third place but you got so many votes I thought I just had to show folks how well you did.

One thing I noticed… as far as I know, with the exception of John Will, all of those super folks in the top three are BJJ purple belts (correct me if I am wrong, someone). And… I am a purple belt too! I don’t know if that means anything but if so I hope that the great work everyone is doing continues on as folks progress to brown and black belts.

In addition to being able to give credit to some folks who work hard on their sites, I hope that the Best BJJ Blog of the Year contest here exposed you to some new ways people are talking about and sharing BJJ on the internet. Just as we all learn when we are on the mats training and grappling against each other and we share techniques and advice, BJJ blogs are an excellent way to promote the same sort of exchanges when we are away from the mat.

Who knows, perhaps some new folks will be inspired to begin their own BJJ blog after seeing what some other people have been doing in 2007. Judging by the increased quantity and quality of BJJ blogs in the last twelve months, I think things will continue to get even better.

Thanks to everyone who voted and if you come across any Brazilian jiu-jitsu blogs that are special, please contact me so it can be considered for our Best BJJ Blog of 2008!

CORRECTION 12-31-07 7:59 AM PST I mistakenly had ShogunHQ in third place the first time this article was published. Thank you Slideyfoot for pointing out the error! My relatives in Australia would not be happy to see me make that mistake! :)
