BJJ Poll: What Type of Hours Does Your BJJ School Keep?

December 19, 2009

This idea for a BJJ Poll came from Jason in Wisconsin, a longtime member of the Mighty 600,000! Thanks Jason!

BJJ Poll: Does Your BJJ School Charge a Fee for Visitors Who Want to Train?

December 12, 2009

We know that 72% of folks bring their gis so they can train Brazilian jiu-jitsu when they travel. I know I always try to hit a new school when I am on the road. Sometimes when you arrive at a new school to train, you’re asked to pay a mat fee to participate.

What does your BJJ academy do when someone from out of town stops in and would like to train? Do they have to pay? If they do, let us know how much your school charges in the comments below!

Thanks to @Diffs13 for the poll idea!

BJJ Poll: What is the Highest BJJ Belt Rank You Think You Will Attain?

December 5, 2009

I think it is safe to say that every member of the Mighty 600,000 that is not a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt dreams of becoming one. And while there are more black belts in jiu-jitsu today than ever before, a minority of the people who sign up for BJJ class and put on a gi will ever make it to black belt.

So in this week’s poll, be honest. What is the highest BJJ belt you think you’ll be awarded? Don’t answer what the belt you want to achieve is, but what you will achieve.

BJJ Poll: Are You Satisfied with the Progress You Have Made in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2009?

November 28, 2009

Hey it’s nearing the end of the year and it’s time to take stock of how far we’ve come. Most people train 3 times per week, which is a lot of time to invest in anything! (I do not know how many times per week religious people go to church on average, but I am guessing it’s less than 3 times!)

So what do you think? As this year draws to a close, how do you feel about the time you’ve put in? Are you better than when you started? Did you meet your training goals?

Vote in this week’s poll, let us know in the comments below, and feel free to leave us a message on the FightWorks Podcast message line 877-247-4662!

BJJ Poll: To What Extent Does Your Spouse, Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Significant Other Support Your BJJ Training?

November 21, 2009

As usual, this week’s poll comes directly from a suggestion we received from a member of the Mighty 600,000, Jon in North Carolina. Jon wonders what the attitude is among the significant others of BJJ folks regarding our training obsessions. A while back we had a revealing episode about how some wives and girlfriends feel about their Brazilian jiu-jitsu guys’ training, but I think this is a good way to measure the pulse of the community instead of a handful of ladies who I was able to bring together for that show.

So grab that special someone in your life and do like Elwood Blues says: “Love him, please him, squeeze her, please her, hold her; Squeeze and please that person, give ‘em all your love”. And then get back to training!

Jon, thanks for the poll idea and thanks again for coming out to the 2009 Pre-Mundials Coffee!

BJJ Poll: Do You Think Performance Enhancing Substances Are a Problem in Jiu-Jitsu Competitions?

November 14, 2009

The idea for this week’s BJJ Poll came to us from one of the Mighty 600,000. He wrote us here at The FightWorks Podcast headquarters in San Diego and put it better than I might be able to so I’ll just pass along his comments:

After participating in a handful of jiu-jitsu tournaments over the last couple years and having been around a gym since the mid-1980s, I’ve come to learn what type of physiques are natural and what types are suspect. However, even a trained eye cannot always be 100% sure who is taking what substance and who isn’t, or who has worked hard in the gym and is equally gifted with great genetics. But sometimes you see someone and it just doesn’t look right. This has gotten me thinking, are performance enhancing substances – the kind you need a doctor’s prescrition for – an issue in jiu-jitsu competitions? Should there be some form of testing?

So what do you think, Family? It’s a very touchy subject indeed but I am very sure you have thoughts on the matter. Sound off! Vote in the poll above, leave a comment below, or even call us at 877-247-4662 and leave us a message we can use in an upcoming show!

BJJ Poll: What Is the Worst Injury You Have Suffered While Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

November 7, 2009

I think most folks who have followed the FightWorks Podcast for a while know my answer to this one! This poll comes to us courtesy of one of the earliest members of the Mighty 600,000, Ross!

BJJ Poll: What Do You Drink After Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

October 31, 2009

Cohost Dan suggested this poll after noticing that after training, certain guys at the academy just tended to always grab the same drink, which were not his drink of choice. What about you? What do you reach for when you just finished a hard session of Brazilian jiu-jitsu training?

Vote and let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

BJJ Poll: How Many Students Train at Your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu School?

October 24, 2009

Yes, I know you probably don’t have access to your jiu-jitsu academy’s official books, but what is your best guess about how many people train at the same location you do? Don’t answer with how many people train within your association, just how many take BJJ classes at the same spot you do.

BJJ Poll: Assuming Jiu-Jitsu Has Had a Positive Impact on Your Fitness, If You Weren't Training BJJ, Would You Be Training Another Sport and Just as Healthy?

October 17, 2009

A lot of us who train Brazilian jiu-jitsu are in pretty good shape. I think that is a conservative statement. Back in July 2008 we covered weight loss in BJJ, relaying the stories of several guys who can attribute their great health now to simply training jiu-jitsu. It is a fact: training BJJ is a terrific way to keep fit.

But what I am wondering this time in our weekly BJJ poll is whether people in our community would be in the same great shape they are in if there was no jiu-jitsu. Heck, maybe they would be hooked on something else like hiking, soccer, or some other physical activity. But maybe there’s something special about BJJ that attracts some people who would not be involved in anything at all. Maybe if there were no jiu-jitsu, the folks who train BJJ now would be avid couch potatoes!

So let us know what you think by voting in this week’s BJJ Poll, and leave a comment below! What would you be doing if you did not have BJJ in your life?
