BJJ Poll: IBJJF Finals as Submission-Only?

by Caleb on June 11, 2011

This week we’re still in the clouds thinking about all the great action at the 2011 IBJJF Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship. What an event! I hope those of you who were able to watch online enjoyed the broadcast from BudoVideos.

Apparently we’re not the only ones replaying all those great matches in our head. We received this email from David, one of the Mighty 600,000:

Huge fan of the website and your work with the Budo videoes Pan/Mundial broadcasts.

Here’s an idea for a BJJ Poll that I don’t think has been used before.

“If the IBJJF announced that the black belt divisions of the Pan/Mundial would be run as submission-only brackets, would this be:”

a) an experiment I’d like to see
b) a total disaster
c) no more interesting to me than the current rules

I just read something from Cobrinha talking about stalling in BJJ. There are so many tweaks to the rules that people propose that I wonder why not do away with “the rules” altogether?

Just a thought, keep up the good work,

David

Thanks for the poll suggestion, David.

What do you think? Would it make things more interesting if matches in the male black belts and female black / brown belt divisions could only be won by submission? Let us know by voting and leaving a comment on the site.

If you’re not familiar with the idea of Sub-Only BJJ competition, be sure to check out this recent episode of The FightWorks Podcast that we devoted to the topic: #235 Submission-Only BJJ and Grappling Tournaments.

It could be done as a separate event for the fans like the homerun derby in mlb or state of origin in rugby league..

I marked total disaster because i think forcing bb to submit each other will just increase the rate of injuries in the bb division. When bb go to submit they go to break the joint not to just apply pressure. From what i’ve seen, some bb would rather have the appendage break rather than tap to an opponent. This is why there are so many injuries already. Making it sub only will just increase this problem.

I think it would change the fighters strategy completely. Endurance would play a major role & no stalling. With the point system out the window the matches would be more exciting.

It would be awesome! I don’t think that injuries will be much more of a problem. Black belts are also Black Belts when it comes to not getting injured or injuring their opponents. So, I think they are the best level to have this type of competition and have it be safe.

I just saw the info for injury rates by belt from the recent episode

http://thefightworkspodcast.com/2011/04/17/bjj-injury/

It turns out black Belts have a slightly higher risk. So, I was wrong about it being safer for Black Belts, but the difference is small.
Also, there was another recent episode about Sub only tournaments.

This episode has a lot of data about sub only tournaments that have been being held for a few years now (I think).
