#242 Andre Galvao, Saulo Ribeiro, and the Women of Gracie Humaita

What do you call a place where a Brazilian jiu-jitsu podcaster can not think about his next show until two days before it’s supposed to be published, make a couple of phone calls, and come home later that evening after speaking to people who collectively have more than a dozen BJJ World Championship gold medals between them? That place is called San Diego.

This week we bring you conversations with some of the most popular and successful Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors in the history of sport BJJ to discuss the upcoming BJJ World Championship in Long Beach June 2nd -5th. We start off with a visit to Atos Jiu-Jitsu‘s headquarters and speak with Andre Galvao. We’ll hear an update on his recent efforts, as well as the story of a harrowing escape from a burning house when he and his (now) wife first visited San Diego in 2005. Galvao fans will not want to miss this interview.

We then hear from the elite women of Gracie Humaita: Leticia Ribeiro, Bia Mesquita, and Mackenzie Dern (we missed Penny Thomas by just a few moments!). These ladies are suffering now and working hard to prepare for the BJJ World Championship a couple weeks away in June.

Finally we’ll stop by the University of Jiu-Jitsu and speak with Saulo Ribeiro. A veteran of many BJJ wars, Saulo won his first BJJ World Championship gold medal as a black belt all the way back in 1997 in a match agains Antonio “Nino” Schembri. Saulo’s racked up many equally impressive titles since that time and though he’s not competing in the 2011 World Championship, we thought we’d pick his brain on who he sees creating the most noise at the event.

Remember if you cannot be in California for the World Championship June 2-5, BudoVideos will be streaming the event online! (Full disclosure: I’ll be part of the broadcast team again!)
