BJJ Poll: How Has BJJ Affected Your Cigarette Smoking?
May 29, 2010
This poll idea was suggested by Liam over at The Part Time Grappler. I feel like I have a pretty intuitive feel for how many Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners smoke but I do not like to guess when we can get actual numbers. Thanks Liam!

Got something to say?

I actually quit smoking about 6 months before I began jiu-jitsu. I had had a couple of attempts at this previously over the 15 years leading up to training. After starting jiu-jitsu though, I clearly had the motivation not to pick back up and start again. My lungs will never be what they would have been if I had never smoked, but there is no way I could sustain 3-4 days per week of training if I did still smoke.
I smoked for about 12 years and smoked for the first 2 years doing jiu jitsu. I stopped smoking because the academy was going to was making some new changes to the structure of school. I knew at that moment I had to stop or the cigarettes would get the better of me because of the new changes of the academy. I’m happy that I stoppped smoking, it has had huge difference in my jiu jitsu.
Hey John,
I wonder what kind of changes you were talking about? Whatever they are they must be working well because you ended-up as a non smoker. I am happy for you.
Out of all the people we have only one smoker among our members and I really want to push him to his limits.
I get so happy to read stories like this. I love jj and this is why. It enriches peoples lives.
I smoked for 18 years and can say with complete confidence I will never smoke again thanks to Jiu Jitsu…
