BJJ Poll: Why Do You Not Take Paid Private Classes with Advanced BJJ Belts?

by Caleb on February 6, 2010

Oftentimes Brazilian jiu-jitsu students will arrange to take a one-on-one private class with a BJJ instructor (usually a black belt). This allows the student to have some specific questions answered and get some special attention they may otherwise not be able to get during a group class. It benefits the instructor of course, as they can earn a healthy hourly fee to supplement their income.

Back in July of last year, we learned that a minority of Brazilian jiu-jitsu students take privates. According to our poll, only 39% of BJJ students take privates. This week our poll hopes to learn why that number is not higher.

Thanks to Brad, one of the Mighty 600,000 for the poll idea! If you have a poll idea, let us know!

I have taken just a few private lessons with my teachers, but they have always been free either as a reward after or in preparation for a tournament. These have always been so valuable to me and I have always walked away with so much more.
I do find myself considering paying for additional lessons but when it comes down to it at the end of the month the money just falls short to other priorities.

I’ve figured if I really want to accelerate my game, I need to go more consistently to class 4+ days a week. I get to roll with my instructor once every week or two, and he frequently watches people on the mats, and I just ask him what he thinks I need to work on. If I’m able to do that consistently, and still don’t think I’m making progress, then I’ll look into privates. In other words, why get more instructionals, private lessons, and all that if I’m not adequately using the resources I already have a pay for?

Some times its just about money. I train 5-6 days a week. Usually compete maybe once ever 1-2 months. And usually attened 1 seminar 1-2 months.

Class fees $110-$140/month depending on school

Tourney Fees $55-$125 or so depending

Seminar’s $75-$300

Privates $75-$100/hr

This can really become overwhelming for anyone.
