First BJJ Promotion Performed Live Online

by Caleb on February 6, 2010

We have heard of jiu-jitsu students receiving belt promotions after studying online via the Gracie University, but to my knowledge there has never been a belt promotion performed live over the internet. In this video from Gracie Barra’s Irvine headquarters, Lucas Rocha is promoted by GB’s Ze Radiola who is present by Skype’s video conferencing feature! You can see him speaking from Brazil to the crowd at the academy in California using his webcam.

Congratulations to Rocha on the promotion. What do you think? Is this something that will be more common in the future?

this is some pretty cool stuff for jiu jitsu and the evolution of where the martial arts is going. Gracie Barra is a great place to train. World class training.

I don’t like the idea of online promotions and really hope they do not become common. But I must admit that if it must be done through “teh internets” then a promotion by a well respected instructor to a long time and hard working student is the way to go.

Nonetheless, congrats to Lucas on his promotion!
