Earlier this week it was announced that Roger Gracie is injured and unable to compete in his scheduled superfight against Robert Drysdale at the 2009 ADCC which takes place September 26 and 27 in Barcelona, Spain. Today after much speculation around the internet, adcombat announced that Roger Gracie’s replacement will be Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza!
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has been competing mostly in mixed martial arts for the past few years. He has racked up an impressive streak of 10-2-0 with one No Contest in MMA. However the Manaus-born fighter was a terror in the gi in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and equally menacing in no-gi. Some of his BJJ and submission grappling accomplishments:
- Second place in the 2005 ADCC absolute division, coming in right behind Roger Gracie, also winning the under 88KG division
- Fought against Randy Couture at the 2007 Professional Submission League, which ended in a draw
- Black belt world champion of the middle heavyweight and absolute divisions in the 2005 BJJ World Championship
- Black belt world champion of the absolute division in the 2004 BJJ World Championship, with a silver medal in the middle heavyweight division
Interestingly, Jacare’s Brazilian jiu-jitsu history includes a length of time as a member of the Brasa team, which is also a part of his opponent Robert Drysdale’s history. You can bet that with $40,000 on the table for the winner that the two will put their relationship aside and put on a great show this month in Spain.
(NFL fans: Jacare also has good taste in football teams!)
