Luka Dias Continues to Wow

While we recently posted about the 2009 Pan-Ams Womens Absolute Division, another story altogether in womens action on Sunday was Luka Dias. We had Luka as a guest here on The FightWorks Podcast back in April of last year after she won the 2008 Pan-Ams absolute division, defeating Michelle Nicolini just as the final seconds of the match ticked away. Luka is not shy about her age (she was 45 last year), and to be competing amongst opponents half her age and winning is inspiring to say the least.

This past Sunday she did it again. While her competition history demonstrates that she is no slouch, stepping on to the mat against Gabrielle Garcia is a tall order for anyone. Garcia is by far the largest female competitor at the black / brown belt level today, and recently began training with one of the best jiu-jitsu teams in the world, Alliance. So when Luka was able to submit Garcia just three minutes into their match with a collar choke, she once again proved not only the central principle of Brazilian jiu-jitsu that technique defeats size and strength, but that Luka Dias is one heck of a role model.
