2009 Pan-Ams Womens Absolute Division Details

March 31, 2009

christy thomas michelle nicolini
Christy Thomas armbars Michelle Nicolini in the womens black / brown belt absolute division at the 2009 BJJ Pan-Ams.

I was unable to stay long enough to get the details of how the absolute division for the black / brown belt females on Sunday, but with major help from Alicia Anthony, BJJ’s best photographer we now bring you some information about how things went down!

  • Gabrielle Garcia (Alliance) defeats Jacqueline Andrade (Team Mica)
  • Michelle Nicolini (Drysdale JJ) defeats Fabiana Borges (Gracie Barra) via triangle choke to armbar
  • Katie Weilbacher (Alliance) defeats Luka Dias (Gracie Humaita) on points
  • Ana Laura Cordeiro defeats Penny Thomas (Gracie Humaita)
  • Michelle Nicolini defeats Katie Weilbacher on points
  • Gabrielle Garcie chokes Valerie Worthington
  • Christy Thomas (Relson Gracie) armbars Michelle Nicolini
  • Ana Laura Cordeiro defeats Sophia McDermott (Machado Jiu-Jitsu) on points
  • Ana Laura Cordeiro beats Gabrielle Garcia on points
  • Ana Laura Cordeiro defeats Christy Thomas on points to become the 2009 womens black / brown belt absolute division champion!

Gracie Barra’s Ana Laura Cordeiro has been invincible. Her accomplishments include first place in the 2008 BJJ Mundials, first place in the 2008 BJJ Pan-Ams, first place in the 2008 No-Gi World Championships, and many others. Anyone want to place bets on whether she gets her black belt this year at the Mundials if she wins again? How could she not!

Tournament Review Tuesday: 2009 Pan-American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships

March 31, 2009

from Rowdy Bricco

On Saturday March 28th I competed in the Pan Am’s held at California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) in Carson California. The event is one of the largest tournaments held in the United States sanctioned by the IBJJF and many consider it our national championships.

This was my first time to the Pan Am’s as either a competitor or a spectator but I have been to other small and larger judo, no-gi and Brazilian jiu jitsu events. Any university in Southern California is large and finding the right entrance into the competition and parking was helped by hand written signs saying “jiu jitsu” and an arrow to eventually get you to the right place.

Once at the gym there were two separate entrances for fighters and for spectators and as you had to have been pre-registered it was as simple as checking in by stating your belt, weight and age division.

Inside the event there were actual facilities for changing, real lockers, a semi-private warm up area, showers and all you would find in an university’s gym and all available to fighters. Otherwise it seemed pretty typical with large mats, bleachers on both sides and a sturdy PVC “fence” to keep the athletes separate from the crowds.

The PA system was loud and clear and I cringed each time I heard in a low booming voice, “So and so is now DQ-ed,” for not reporting to the warm up area or mat on time. The IBJJF has run large tournaments for years so if you thought you could be an hour late on “Brazil time” you were mistaken. Once your division was called to the warm up area you were locked into the system and there until you lost or medaled.

When your division was called you were sequestered in a large warm up area with everyone else and the tension was palpable. There was not enough room to truly warm up, so you had better enjoy exercising in place to stay loose. When your name was called your ID was checked. (I actually read all the rules and regulations the night before on the IBJJF website and was glad I did. The gi I originally choose would not have passed the technical inspection). You were required to have your ID with you at all times and it was checked repeatedly something many first time competitors were not expecting. Nor were some fighters expecting a stringent interpretation of the gi’s requirements. I personally saw more than one person asked to change their gi for incorrect fit, tears, patch placement and color. Those who could not find a replacement were disqualified. You were also required to remove any brace, support or even cup.

Again, this is not a small local tournament and the people in ‘tech’ were professional, quick and serious about their job. The scales were all digital; all read the same and were thankfully one pound lighter than my scale at home.

Having passed technical inspection you were escorted to the timing and scoring table for your mat, ID checked again and then told, “It’s your turn” and waved onto the mat. The mats were clean, a reasonable distance apart and the referees were all dressed in black polo shirts and slacks providing them with an official air and inspired respect. If you were wearing a contrasting color gi to your opponent you were not required to wear the green and yellow belt, which I enjoyed not having to do. No one other than fighters were allowed on the mat, so if you were used to your coach giving you instruction, or screaming at you, three feet from your ear it was not to be. It really felt like just you and your opponent and the crowd noise totally disappeared. I did find it hard to hear the time expiration whistle and noticed others did too by trying to continue their matches after the whistle had been blown and standing up with a confused look on their face thinking they still had more time.

Standing with the referee at the end of the match if you looked at the score table you had to do some quick math as the scores were displayed by type, not total points as well as any earned advantages. If you had tunnel vision during your match it was nice to see where you earned points but then you also had to have the presence of mind to add them up for a total score as well.

If you won it seemed most people had two other matches to rest before there next one and if they both ended quickly you really hoped all the conditioning you had done paid off. (You did do extra conditioning if you were competing at the Pan Am’s, right?) Then you kept fighting and hopefully winning until your division was over and you medaled. At the far end of the gym was a nice background and a podium for the medalists in each division.

How do I know? This reviewer happened to find himself there! I won the silver medal for men’s blue belt, light feather, senior one. When your name was called, “So and so to the medal podium please” it was as if it was happening in a dream. The medals were very heavy, good sized and impressive. The lion logo also matched the one on your competitor t-shirt. Taking your place on the podium and bending forward for the girl to drape the medal around your neck, 20 people taking your picture and your friends and team members cheering on, it is unmatched in the feeling from other tournaments.

The 2009 IBJJF Pan American Championship is an extremely well run tournament for the number of competitors, spectators and only happening once a year. The spectator fee of only $5 made it easy to have supporters there, the minimal vendor booths kept the athletic atmosphere rather than a commercial one, I heard very few complaints about referees and once you were ‘in the system’ as an athlete you were treated as a professional and with courtesy.

My division had athletes from as far away as Delaware and others had people from Brazil and other countries. If you put in the hard work and want to compete in a well run tournament with high level competition, well then, I will see you at the Pan Am’s next year!

Cadu (Gracie Humaita) is attempting an omoplata on Fabio Leopoldo. It does not work but he gets the sweep! Now Leopoldo reverses!

Baret Yoshida is up against an unidentified opponent and is down 0-2.

Andrew Smith loses 8-0 against Regis Lebre.

Anselmo Baldin versus Leo Dalla is starting now.

Baret Yoshida defeats his opponent. The opponent is contesting the stoppage vigorously and seems to be suggesting that Yoshida had inserted fingers into his opponents nose or something. It’s across the mats so I cant understand the details but that’s what the body language suggests. Yoshida was working a deep collar choke from the back at the time of the stoppage.

At the 3 minute mark, Leo Dalla sinks a deep armbar on Anselmo Baldin.

Dave Jacobs is up against Alex Ferreira (Gracie Humaita).

Alliance‘s Babs is up against an unidentified opponent.

Dave Jacobs is up 2-0 and is in Ferreira’s guard.

Time expires in the Comprido vs. Dalla match. The ref deems Comprido to be the more successful competitor in an otherwise dead even match.

I missed the ending of Jared Weiner’s match, but by his body language it looks like he was not victorious.

Jared Vanderzyl (Fabio Santos) is up against an unknown opponent on mat 4. He’s on bottom in half guard.

Alliance’s Babs is now up against an unknown opponent. He gets an advantage for his choke attempt from the guard, and now gets two points for the sweep. Now his opponent is doubled over in pain! The medics are attending to him. It appears he may have popped his knee badly during the sweep. I really feel bad for him.

Jared Vanderzyl loses a close match. The score was tied 0-0 and he was down by one advantage.

Babs’ opponent is carried off the mat and Babs is declared the winner.

Renato Tavares wins his match. It turns out his opponent only had the use of one arm. The audience applauds both fighters’ efforts.

Sean Bansfield is working from full guard on his opponent and now begins an omoplata attack sequence.

Time expires and Sean Bansfield wins his match.

An announcement is made that the walkways need to be cleared or the fire marshall will shut the event down. This is the same thing we heard at Grapplers Quest last weekend.

Ricardo “Franjinha” Miller is now on the mats against New Breed opponent Chris Wolford.

Franjinha is now up 5-0 against Wolford. Time expires as he was working an armlock.

Cleber Luciano wins 2-0.

Chewy Ibarra wins 5-0.

Sean Bansfield defeats D. Davis.

gm

The tournament is being stopped again to clear the lanes, as per the fire marshall’s orders. for a moment of silence in memory of Helio Gracie. After the one minute of silence ends, the venue erupts in unanimous applause, and Rickson Gracie enters the center of the mats to say some words about his father.

Megaton is fighting off a deep triangle from Mario Reis! Reis sinks it and wins!

Nivaldo Lima (Check Mat), loudly coached cheered on by Robert Drysdale, is now facing Otavio Souza.

Abmar Barbosa is on deck against Kron Gracie.

Nivaldo Lima is in half guard underneath Souza and the score is tied 0-0. This was how he beat Rafael Lovato Jr. last weekend at Grapplers Quest.

Nivaldo Lima sweeps Otavio Souza and is up 2-0! Souza returns the favor and it’s now 2-2 and he’s back on top in Lima’s open guard.

Cobrinha is back in action and is fending off a leglock.

Michael Langui (Alliance) now faces Leo Leite (not Lucas) from Gracie Barra.

WOW. Nivaldo Lima clearly swept Otavio Souza at the end. The time was 9m57s and he would’ve been up 4-2. But the ref did not grant any points. Leo Vieira and the Check Mat crowd are furious. Nivaldo Lima would’ve beaten the competitor going into the black belt absolute finals.

Abmar Barbosa and Kron Gracie are tied 0-0 after 3m39s.

Cobrinha has his hands full with his opponent. It’s tied 2-2.

Out of nowhere Kron Gracie sticks a deep kneebar on Abmar Barbosa at the 4m01s mark. The crowd cheers the efforts of Rickson Gracie’s son.

Vitor Estima is now up against an unknown opponent.

At the 8m40s mark Cobrinha’s opponent is disqualified. From where I sit it looks like the ref deemed his leg attacks to be an illegal twisting knee attack.

Michael Langui (Alliance) defeats Leo Leite (GB).

Word is that they stopped letting people into the venue. That is a first.

Carlos Diego Ferreira is giving Vitor Estima a run for his money. Wait! He just took Estima’s back, goes up 4-0, and then chokes Vitor!

Mario Reis is up 4-2 over his opponent.

Lucas Leite and Augusto Vieira are still tied 0-0 at the 3m25s mark.

Mario Reis wins 4-2 as time expires.

At 5m40s, Lucas Leite is now up 2-0 over Augusto Vieira. Leite is on top in Vieira’s open guard.

The Gracie Barra cheering section is getting heated in the contest between Leite and Vieira. As time runs out, Leite remains up 2-0, sealing another long-fought victory. A very tough match.

Kron Gracie is now up against Carlos Diego Ferreira. Ferreira pulls guard and Kron is basing out, beginning to pass.

Ferreira gets 2 points for a sweep but now Kron reverses! It’s tied 2-2 and Kron’s almost in side mount.

At 2m15s Kron Gracie gets a straight footlock on Carlos Diego Ferreira!!!

Rodrigo Cavaca (Check Mat) is now up 2-0 over James Foster (Lotus Club).

Cavaca is now up 5-0 over James Foster.

Cavaca is now up 14-0 over Foster. Time expires and Cavaca advances.

Roberto Tozi is beating Marcus Neuenschwager (Gracie Barra) 5-0. Tozi goes on to win.

Rodrigo Cavaca vs Andre de Freitas (Cesar Gracie) has begun, as has Rafael Lovato Jr. versus Alexandre Santos (Gracie Barra). Cavaca and de Freitas fought last week at Grapplers Quest. Last week Cavaca won by choke.

Lovato Jr. is working from open guard against Santos. At 2m25s the match is tied 0-0.

Cavaca is winning against de Freitas 2-0.

Lovato Jr. is working from the guard still. The score is still 0-0 but Lovato Jr. has one advantage.

Cavaca is standing in de Freitas’ guard and the score remains 2-0 in Cavaca’s favor.

Time expires in two matches: Cavaca wins 2-0 over de Freitas and Lovato Jr. defeats Santos by the narrowest of margins: one advantage point from a score of 0-0.

Roberto “Tussa” Alencar is on the mat against fellow Gracie Barra fighter Marlon Xavier.

Tussa has taken his opponent’s back and is now up 4-0. He sinks the choke and wins at 4m01s.

Flavio Almeida is now on top in half guard against an unidentified competitor.

Almeida is now up 6-0 at the 2m55s mark.

Almeida taps his opponent. I missed the submission but it ended way early.

Tussa is now up against Roberto Tozi. Tozi gets two points for a takedown early.

Tozi is now in Tussa’s full guard. A dangerous place to be and Tozi shows he knows it by playing very conservative in there. Now Tozi passes and the score is 5-0!

Tozi’s back in Tussa’s guard, and attemptig to pass with double underhooks. Tussa just got 2 points because Tozi was stalling. It’s 5-2. When they restart, they mix legs and Tussa rolls over into a kneebar at 6m42s!

Uh oh! Rafael Lovato Jr. is now up against Flavio Almeida! Lovato pulls full guard and Almeida remains standing.

Lovato Jr. had a triangle attempt for a quick moment but not long enough for an advantage point. He appeared to sweep Almeida but Almeida recovered. Lovato Jr. now leads by one advantage point.

The time is now 5m09s in Lovato Jr. versus Almeida. Almeida is threatening the pass but is not there yet. Lovato now leads 2 advantages to 1 although the score is still 0-0.

Action is stopped at 8m47s as the two tired competitors retie their gis. The Gracie Barra and Gracie Humaita are following this heavyweight match very closely!

Time is running out and I have to apologize!!!! I had the advantages wrong! THe score is still 0-0 but it was Almeida who was in the lead on advantages!! He wins it 4 advantages to Lovato Jr.s’ two. The two men are exhausted.

Fabio Leopoldo wins a match against another black belt from Street Sports Jiu-Jitsu.

Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu is now up against Antonio Braga Neto for the super heavyweight title!

Braga Neto pulls half guard. Cyborg is on top basing out and trying to avoid sweeps.

Braga Neto gets a sweep and is up 2-0 over Cyborg.

At 8m06s Braga Neto sinks a deep collar choke on Cyborg!

Now Felipe Costa (Brasa) is in his rooster weight match for the gold medal against Joao Carlos Kurao.

Felipe Costa and Joao Carlos Kurao is still tied at 0-0 after 6m27s.

The damage I have done to my bladder by not getting up once all day compels me to suggest that if you’ve enjoyed today’s coverage, I wouldn’t hold it against you if you picked up one of our sweet gi patches! :)

Kurao gets side mount on Costa and is up 3-0!

Time runs out and Joao Carlos Kurao wins 3-0 over Felipe Souza to win the gold.

Rafael Freitas (Gracie Barra) now takes on Yoshihiko Matsumo for the gold in the featherweight division.

D. Davis is in action against Jack McVicker.

Yoshihiko Matsumo defeats Rafael Freitas. Sorry, I didn’t see what happened but whatever it was was at 5m59s.

Mario Reis (Gracie Barra) now faces Cobrinha for the title. Reis attempts to pull guard quickly. Cobrinha winds up in half guard on top.

Jack McVicker defeats D. Davis.

Mario Reis has earned one penalty. Cobrinha has two advantages. Otherwise the score is still 0-0 between these two phenoms.

Cobrinha takes Reis’ back, gets 4 points, and chokes Reis with a bow and arrow choke at 7m22s!!!

Now we see Lucas Leite versus Kron Gracie!

Kron is angling to take Leite’s back! The pair roll out of bounds! At the moment Kron is up by one advantage but the score is 0-0! Three refs pull the pair back into the middle. Kron quickly sinks both hooks in and is up 4-0!

Kron and Leite scramble apart and now are restarted in the center. Only 2m57 have expired.

Leite sweeps and is now on top. The score is 4-2 in Kron’s favor.

Leite is not allowing Kron to establish his closed guard game. Now 6m27s have passed and the score is still 4-2 for Kron. THey each have 2 advantages as well.

Leite now gets an advantage for a near pass. They take a moment to re-tie their gis after moving out of bounds. The momentum seems to have shifted back to Leite.

Now Leite scores a takedown and is now on top. The score is 4-4 and there is 90 seconds remaining. Leite is up on advantages by one.

At 9m16s Leite secures side mount and is up 7-4. The crowd is chanting “Lucas! Lucas! Lucas!”

Time expires and Leite wins. Kron respectfluly applauds Leite.

Kron heads to his father and coach, Rickson Gracie, who appears to reassure him of his performance and gives him a hug.

Lucas Lepri and Michael Langui are now stepping on to mat 7. Instead of competing, the two Alliance competitors agree to let Lucas Lepri take home the gold.

Rodrigo Cavaca (Check Mat) is now on the mats against Marcio Corleta (Winner). This is for the ultra heavyweight title.

Corleta has Cavaca on his back with what looks like a ton of pressure. He secures side mount on Cavaca and is up 3-0.

Corleta then secures knee on the belly after being north south on Cavaca. I have not seen Cavaca compete before last weekend, but in the good number of matches I have seen him in since then I have not seen someone handle him this way. Corleta secures the armbar and Cavaca is forced to tap!

Antonio Braga Neto (Gordo Jiu-Jitsu) is now being called to mat 4 to compete against Otavio Souza for the black belt absolute division. Braga Neto enjoys a large size advantage over Souza. Souza pulls guard, and Braga Neto stands, opening Souza’s guard. He’s now trying to work past Souza’s open guard.

After 4m30s the score is still 0-0 with no advantages between Souza and Braga Neto.

8 minutes have passed and the score is still 0-0 with no advantages between Souza and Braga Neto. No advantages for either side.

At just about the 9 minute mark, Braga Neto secures side mount and gets 3 points. Souza deserves a ton of credit for keeping the giant Braga Neto at bay this long. Time expires and Antonio Braga Neto is the 2009 Pan Absolute Champion!

Brown Belt Men

Jonathan Torres (Lloyd Irvin) defeats his first opponent in 1m33s by bow and arrow choke.

Zack Maxwell versus Justin Rader is now underway on mat 5. Maxwell began with a triangle attempt that Rader pulled out of.

Zack Maxwell defeats Justin Rader on points in a very close intra-Humaita match. These two will be anchors of future black belt divisions for Gracie Humaita.

Michael Westbrook gets armbarred by an unknown opponent.

Robert Harper (Rafael Lovato Jr.) versus Ryan Beauregard has just begun.

Beauregard armbars Harper at 4m19s.

Jonathan Torres now on the mat against Jimmy Jarquin.

Ian McPherson defeats an unknown opponent.

Jonathan Torres has his opponent’s back with his legs in a body lock around him. The score is 6-0 in Torres’ favor.

Jonathan Torres wins on points 6-0 as time expires.

Alliance’s Daren Roberts is looking good in his match. Had a very near armbar.

Daren Roberts beats his opponent.

Rafael Dall Inha (Carlson Gracie) is up against Jason Hayes (BJJ United) opponent.

Hayes beats Dall Inha by one advantage point.

Ryan Beauregard will face Jonathan Torres in a moment or two.

Torres is all over Beauregard. He’s taken his back and Torres has established the body lock with his legs on another opponent.

Jonathan Torres gets the gi choke at 5m40s against Ryan Beauregard.

Joao Assis appears to have been disqualified in a match against an Alliance opponent.

Jonathan Torres is now on the mats against Jake McKenzie.

Torres and his foe have spend the match in a pretty unusual stalemate. The score is still 0-0 with no advantages. As time expires both stand and declare victory. The referee raises the hand of Jake McKenzie.

Steve Rosenberg defeats Jay Hayes by two advantage points. The score was 6-6.

Steve Rosenberg defeats Jake McKenzie. McKenzie is holding his foot in pain.

Womens Black / Brown Belts

Luka Dias is now up against a familiar foe, Gabrielle Garcia (Alliance).

Michelle Nicolini armbars Jen Petrina in short order.

Penny Thomas is now in action against Jacqueline Andrade.

Garcia is up 4-0 over Luka Dias.

At 3m01 Luka DIas taps Garcia with a gi choke! Dias is in her 40′s and has once again delivered an unbelievable performance against the odds.

Penny Thomas is busy fighting out of a deep triangle!

Penny Thomas, coached by Limao has escaped and now taken her opponent’s back, and now gets the mount! The score is 10-0 for Thomas!

Thomas is now on Andrade’s back once again, and is up 14-0. At the 8m24s mark Penny Thomas sinks the choke and Andrade taps.

Fabiana Borges (Gracie Barra) is now up against Robert Drysdale’s wife Michelle Nicolini for the gold on mat 1.

Just 15 seconds into the match Borges jumps into a deep triangle on Nicolini. Nicolini escapes and but along the way sinks a very deep footlock that causes Nicolini to tap immediately! The match ended in about 90 seconds! Watch out for Borges!

Kyra Gracie is now in action. After a few moments she pulls guard.

Now Kyra has a solid side mount on her opponent.

Christie Thomas (Relson Gracie) is now up against Katie Weilbacher (Paragon).

Weilbacher is now up 3-0 against Thomas.

Kyra is sinking a deep choke against her opponent.

Now we are in for a match! It’s Penny Thomas (Gracie Humaita) against Ana Laura Cordeiro (Gracie Barra)! This is for the gold and has all eyes from both teams! Cordeiro pulls guard immediately.

Vidal is now in Kyra’s full guard.

Vidal passes and is up 3-0 against Kyra!

She now gets knee in the belly and is up 5-0 against Kyra!

Time runs out! If I have kept score correctly, Carolina VIdal defeats Kyra Gracie by 7-0!

Epilogue 11:30 PM Sunday evening

I ended up leaving while the women’s black / brown absolute division was just beginning, around 7:30 pm Pacific. I apologize to those ladies for not being able to post their matches but our server appeared to begin having serious issues due to the incredible traffic we were getting, and my internet connection in the gym itself wasn’t the most solid to begin with. Plus I hadn’t really eaten or gone to the bathroom in about 8 hours. So I decided that the server not responding to anything I tried to post plus this reporter’s physiological requirements were enough reason for me to call it a day!

Thanks to everyone for staying tuned to the 2009 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships here on The FightWorks Podcast! Hope you enjoyed it!

#158 2009 Pan-Ams

March 29, 2009

otavio souza cobrinha pan-ams
Alliance’s Rubens Charles (aka Cobrinha) disputes the two points given to his opponent Otavio Souza, of Gracie Barra at the 2009 Pan-Ams.

The 2009 BJJ Pan-Ams are in full swing! Yesterday in Los Angeles marked the second day of the three-day event, which featured incredible competitors and record numbers of participants.

Yesterday I live blogged the black belt divisions (and a touch of the brown belt divisions), which captivated the large audience from one end of the room to the other. I also managed to sit down with several important voices in Brazilian jiu-jitsu to help recap the action for you. In today’s episode of The FightWorks Podcast you will hear from:

  • Pan-Ams event organizer Mike Buckels, of the IBJJF
  • Kid Peligro, the author of The Gracie Way and longtime BJJ journalist
  • Luca Atalla, the editor in chief of GracieMag.
  • Carlos Gracie Jr., the head of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation
  • Alicia Anthony, the sport’s busiest photographer whose work is found at aliciaphotos.com

Also included in today’s show: several calls from the Mighty 600,000, and Aesopian and I will finish discussing a popular recent post on his website called 10 Quick Tips for White Belts.

2009 Pan-Ams Attendance Breaks Records

March 28, 2009

During the action at today’s 2009 BJJ Pan-Ams, I sat down for a quick moment with Mike Buckels, one of the head event organizers inside the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Foundation. Mike had some very impressive things to say about turnout this year…

Caleb: Give us some perspective on the number of competitors this year at the 2009 Pan-Ams.

Mike Buckels: We have about 2,500 competitors this year. Obviously that’s a massive tournament and about 500 more than we’ve had at the Worlds or Pan-Ams to this point, so that’s a huge turnout.

Caleb: Give people a little insight into the setup for the black belt absolute divisions.

Mike Buckels: Most of the divisions are set by feeding the competitors into a computer. Obviously everything’s computerized. It just spits out divisions. In the black belt divisions however, for the fans, especially in the black belt open class, a lot of the heads of the different organizations and teams will get together and they seed the black belt fighters to make it a better experience for the spectators. So for example, you don’t get a match up like, in say, last year’s final – Roger Gracie versus Xande Ribeiro in the preliminary rounds instead of the finals. You want the finals and semifinals to be exciting. So they go through a seeding process with the black belts. [There is] a trememendous amount of competitors this year in the black belt divisions. I think from featherweight to heavyweight there are no less than 10 black belts per division in the adult class alone, not even counting the masters and seniors divisions.

Caleb: That’s a big jump.

Mike Buckels: It means that across divisions we’re probably talking about between 80 to 100 adult black belt competitors here. And again, I’m not talking about the masters and seniors. That’s just adults.

Caleb: If this big of a jump in attendance happened between the Mundials and now, then what we see at this summer’s Mundials should be off the charts.

Mike Buckels: It should be, and we have to get prepared for it. With the recession that the country is in we actually expected less people this year. We expected about a 10 to 20 percent drop. We were expecting around 1,800 and 2,500 competitors registered. So if this is any indication, Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a sport, even in a recession, is thriving.

Black Belt Mens Absolute Division

The black belts have begun!

Rodrigo Cavaca (Check Mat) is now on the mats against an undisclosed smaller competitor, whom he triangles in under a minute.

Otavio Souza (Gracie Barra) is now on mat one against a Japanese black belt who pulls half guard immediately.

Roberto Tozi is now squaring off against a large-framed opponent.

Otavio Souza is now up 7-0 against his opponent andis mounted and setting up a choke.

Tozi is on top in half guard.

Souza finishes the choke and his hand is raised in victory.

Romulo Barral, Rafael Lovato Jr., Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, Lucas Leite, and other black belts can be seen warming up in the staging area.

Tozi remains on top in half guard aafter several miunutes.

Tozi’s opponent turtled, only to obtain full guard a moment later.

In the only black belt match underway at the moment, Tozi and his opponent are now standing.

Time expires and the ref raises Tozi’s hand.

Wellington “Megaton” Dias is now on mat 10 against an opponent from Gracie Barra. The Barra competitor pulls guard.

Megaton has his GB opponent in full guard and is working to prevent the pass.

Megaton’s opponent stands, and Megaton’s guard opens. His GB opponent then attempts to pull full guard from standing but Megaton lands in half guard.

Now Megaton is on bottom and in open guard. He appears to be setting up a kneebar / footlock / sweep combo but his opponent is wise to it and Megaton ends up going to turtle. Sorry I can’t tell you the score – I’m unable to see it.

Megaton is now fending off his opponent’s attempt to take his back.

Time expires and the ref raises Megaton’s opponent’s hand.

An Alliance competitor that I do not recognize wearing Fabio Gurgel patches has his hand raised after a long match that went the full time.

Rodrigo Cavaca now takes on Roberto Tozi. Cavaca begins attempting to pull guard. Tozi is now on top in half guard.

Cavaca is now working on setting up attacks against Tozi from full guard.

A black belt in a Robert Drysdale gi triangles a Gracie Barra black belt for the win.

Otavio Souza is now stepping on the mats against a Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu opponent.

Cavaca and Tozi remain in the same position. Cavaca is attacking from full guard and Tozi is patiently waiting for a moment to get a guard pass going.

Otavio Souza pulls guard against his Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu opponent.

Tozi remains more or less stationary in his battle against Cavaca. The referee deducts an advantage point.

Souza sweeps his opponent and mounts. He is up 6-0.

Cavaca defeats Tozi. He was in the middle of a gogoplata-style attack when I looked away. The next thing I know his hand is being raised.

Antonio Braga Neto (Ralph Gracie) is on top in half guard against a Gracie Barra opponent.

Souza is holding full guard against his Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu opponent, who is standing.

Antonio Braga Neto is attempting to take his opponent’s back. His opponent was turtled but has now turned in and is in half guard on bottom.

Souza and his opponent are exchanging foot lock attacks.

Braga Neto is lowering his substantial weight into his Gracie Barra opponent.

Braga Neto is now on top while his opponent is in turtle. Braga Neto is arching over his opponent’s back to work on that far side arm.

Time elapses in Otavio Souza’s match and he wins 6-0.

Braga Neto changes things up and taps his smaller opponent with a foot lock.

Romulo Barral is now up against a competitor wearing Axis Jiu-Jitsu patches.

Lucas Leite is now stepping on the mats against an unidentified opponent. Leite pulls half guard and quickly sweeps for a 2 point lead.

Barral is on top in half guard.

Barral finishes his opponent with a choke from half guard.

Roberto Cyborg Abreu is now up against the Alliance / Fabio Gurgel competitor I mentioned earlier. The Alliance competitor almost takes Cyborg’s back in the opening seconds but Cyborg recomposes and is on top in half guard.

Leite remains on top in half guard with a 2-0 lead.

Rodrigo Cavaca will face Antonio Braga Neto in a moment on mat 10.

Now it is Cyborg who has his Alliance opponent’s back and Cyborg begins working a collar choke.

Cyborg only had one hook in for most of that choke attempt but now he sinks both hooks and really begins cranking that choke. His Alliance / Fabio Gurgel opponent taps rapidly!

Now Lucas Leite wins his match against his unidentified opponent by a score of 2-0. Not much action there.

Rafael Lovato Jr. is now stepping on the mats against an unknown opponent.

The two giants, Cavaca and Braga Neto are now in action on mat 10. Cavaca attempts to pull guard and only obtains half guard.

Lovato Jr. is now holding his opponent in full guard.

The ref slaps Braga Neto’s hand away for an illegal grip in Cavaca’s pants while he attempts to pass. He remains on top in half guard.

Lovato Jr.’s opponent is turtled. Lovato Jr. is in front and appears to be setting up a choke.

Cavaca’s guard continues to frustrate Braga Neto, who cannot pass yet.

Lovato Jr. and his opponent both stand, and Lovato Jr. pulls guard. His opponent manages to avoid getting caught in full guard and Lovato Jr. begins defending double underhooks.

I turned away and when I look back at mat 1, Lovato Jr. is sinking a deep triangle on his opponent! He wins!

Cavaca remains on bottom and Braga Neto is still attempting to pass.

Cobrinha is now up on mat one against the unknown Robert Drysdale black belt. Cobrinha is already working the omoplata / triangle combo.

The contest between the two towers is now over – Cavaca comes up short against Braga Neto, who was on top the whole match.

Cobrinha climbed all over his much bigger Drysdale opponent and gets the tap.

Cyborg is up against Romulo Barral. Cyborg pulls half guard quickly.

Lucas Leite is now stepping on the mats against Otavio Souza. This is getting good!

Leite and Souza are patiently measuring each other up. It appears there may have been a simultaneous guard-pulling accident and Leite is now being attended to by the medics for a cut on his cheek.

Barral has now gotten side mount on the powerful Cyborg. Cyborg escapes and is now in half guard on bottom again.

When Leite and Souza restart, Leite is in Souza’s full guard.

Barral is now attempting to take Cyborg’s back and is working to get the hooks in.

Barral sinks the choke and eliminates Cyborg from the absolute division.

A huge crowd is watching the Leite / Souza match. Among the spectators are Royler Gracie, Rickson Gracie, Kron Gracie (much bigger than I have seen him in the past), Leo Vieira, Vitor Estima, Braulio Estima, and Robert Drysdale.

Souza gets a sweep and now Leite is on bottom, almost in an x-guard position.

Souza takes Leite’s back! It doesn’t last long and now Leite is on bottom in half guard again.

Souza and Leite are being restarted and are tying their belts after the two stand simultaneously.

Souza pulls a tight triangle frmo standing! Leite escaps but now finds himself defending an omoplata! Souza turns it into a sweep and is now winning 8-0.

Now Leite sweeps and it’s 8-2!

Again they are started from standing. Leite pulls haf guard. A moment later the whistle blows and that’s the match. Souza takes the victory on points.

It’s now Lovato Jr. against Cobrinha! The crowd around mat one grows even bigger!

Lovato tries to pull guard sneakily but Cobrinha backs out. now Cobrinha pulls guard and Lovato Jr. is passing.

Cobrinha is now craftily working underneath Lovato’s legs, who stands while Cobrinha has one leg! The two wrangle out of bounds while Cobrinha still had an excellent single leg takedown setup. As they are restarted in the center the ref doesn’t give the much smaller Cobrinha Lovato’s foot, much to the crowd’s audible dismay. No matter, in a moment Cobrinha has pulled guard and swept the much larger Lovato Jr, and now enjoys a 2-0 lead.

The only match underway now is Cobrinha against Lovato Jr, and the gym is surprisingly quiet as it pays detailed attention to this David and Goliath matchup.

Time expires and Cobrinha wins on points 2-0! The gym erupts from its silence into applause!

We now have Romulo Barral against Antonio Braga Neto on mat 10! The two slap hands and circle each other. Barral sits back into open guard. The large Braga Neto attempts to quiet Barral’s active legs but is having difficulty.

Barral misses a sweep attempt and remains on bottom.

Like Braga Neto’s earlier match, he and Barral remain in half guard. Braga Neto defends, Barral continues to actively work for a sweep.

If you took a hundred photos of the match between Barral and Braga Neto, they would all look very similar. No big changes to speak of.

Time expires and Braga Neto wins. I can’t see the score from where I am but it could not have been a big lead. Perhaps just advantage points.

I think the only remaining black belt match is Otavio Souza versus Cobrinha.

Cobrinha and Souza are now circling.

Cobrinha appears to be looking to pull guard by his posture, but as soon as he does, Souza reciprocates. They are both facing each other with their butts on the ground and are vying for the best grips. Souza is the first to come up on his knees, and stands.

Now Souza is low, attempting to penetrate the open guard of Cobrinha. The winner of this match will go against Antonio Braga Neto tomorrow for the absolute title.

Cobrinha has turned Souza’s gi lapels into places to work spider guard and Souza appears to protest to the ref that this is a forbidden use of the gi, but the ref allows it to continue.

After what feels like 7 or 8 minutes, Cobrinha gets a sweep and is up 2-0!

Cobrinha is now in Souza’s full guard. He opens Souza’s legs and stands. Souza now sweeps and the score is tied 2-2! Now the time expires and due to a one point advantage he held for most of the match, Otavio Souza wins! He will face Antonio Braga Neto tomorrow for the black belt absolute title!

Brown Belt Mens Absolute Division

Ian McPherson (Alliance) defeats Ralph Go in under one minute.

Ian McPherson is now up against Tony Tipton.

I must’ve missed McPherson vs Tipton. Sorry!

McPherson is now up against an enormous Jarrod Bunch. McPherson pulls guard and goes for an omoplata but his opponent picks him clear up off the ground.

McPherson appears to have swept his opponent but was not given points.

McPherson taps Bunch with a footlock! The crowd rewards him with their appreciation!

McPherson is now in another match and is tied on points 2-2 but up by 3 advantages.

McPherson wins!

Now McPherson is up against a tough brown belt from Arman Barros (Roberto Traven) and is mounted.

In his match against Arman Barros, Ian McPherson is disqualified by the referee for pulling 50/50 guard! The ref states that the position jeopardizes the knee in a twisting manner. McPherson acknowledges that he was down and would have had a hard time coming back to win anyhow.

Joao Assis defeats a UNIJJ opponent by a score of 10-0 and advances to the brown belt absolute finals.

Last and final update, 5:35 PM Pacific: Okay that is it for our live coverage here on thefightworkspodcast.com today, Family! Stay tuned tomorrow for all the black belt weight divisions and the finals of the absolute division!

BJJ Poll: Are You Satisfied with the Instruction You Receive in Your Jiu-Jitsu Class for Takedowns and Throws?

March 28, 2009

Modern Brazilian jiu-jitsu instruction currently focuses on ground fighting techniques. Most BJJ schools make sure to include instruction on ways to bring the fight to the ground, whether by takedown or judo-style throws. Some schools do a better job than others in this department however.

What about at your BJJ academy? Do you feel like you receive enough instruction on takedowns and throws? Chat about it in the comments section of this post!

Can Alliance Bring Home the Gold at the 2009 Pan-Ams?

March 26, 2009

gabrielle garcia
Gabrielle Garcia (right) versus Ana Carolina Vidal at the 2007 BJJ Mundials.

Well the Mighty 600,000 appear to believe that Alliance Jiu-Jitsu will be the team to bring home first place this weekend at the 2009 Pan-Ams in Carson, California. At the moment of this writing, most respondents in our BJJ Poll believe that Alliance will come out on top.

Here’s a few things that are worth noting about the Alliance roster, for those who are counting.

Noteworthy Alliance competitors who are not on the registration list for this weekend:

Of course there are legions of Alliance competitors in white, blue, purple, and brown belt divisions that could help push Alliance into first place this year. Perhaps I’m just disappointed that some of the jiu-jitsu competitors who I most enjoy watching will not be there. In any case I am certain that a) there are some competitors in the black belt divisions who will exhale deeply when they learn that some of these competitors will not be present, and b) I’m sure that these names will be competing at the 2009 Mundials in June, so we will get to see them then.

And don’t think for a minute that Alliance is not coming without some big guns. Here are some folks who have signed up.

  • Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles. I should not have to say anything about Cobrinha, but here goes: 1rst place in the 2006, 2007, and 2008 Mundials.
  • Bill “The Grill” Cooper, who put on a show last weekend at Grapplers Quest (see here and here), is considered by many to be the strongest American black belt competitor today.
  • Recently acquired Gabrielle Garcia (shown above on the right side of the image). Formerly under the Macaco Gold flag, Garcia began training this year with Alliance. While this brown belt is physically imposing and often dominating, her technique has not been the sharpest. However after spending significant time with Fabio Gurgel, aka “The General” in Sao Paulo, there’s a very good chance we see a new Garcia this time around. Traditionally Gracie Humaita and Gracie Barra have had deep ranks of female competitors and now Alliance has someone to watch out for.
  • Lucas Lepri, who took second place in the 2008 Mundials and first place in the 2007 Mundials
  • Michael Langhi, who took third in the 2008 Mundials and just came in first place at the 2009 European Championships

You get the idea. Alliance can show up with only half the bullets in their gun and still be a contender for first place. Are you as excited about the 2009 Pan-Ams as I am?!?

We are now just days away from the 2009 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Pan-Ams this coming weekend in Carson, California! The Pan-Ams is like a joyous holiday of the year for me. The best competitors in the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu consider the Pan-Ams a “must do” event so the action is incredible.

Are you the type of person who would prefer to sit right on the edge of the mats and watch some of the world’s best BJJ competitors in action? In the past we’ve discussed how you can volunteer to be a time keeper or score keeper at these events. You give a little of your time and get to sit right next to the action while the best jiu-jitsu fighters around go at it.

I was on the phone with Mike Buckels, part of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation event coordination staff, yesterday and he mentioned an added perk for those who volunteer to assist with score keeping and time keeping duties this coming weekend: you get a one year complimentary membership to the United States Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation!

I can hear you saying now: “What is a membership to the United States Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation?” Well the details have not been formalized as yet, but what we do know is that such memberships already exist for the national BJJ federations in Brazil, France, Portugal, Japan, and Canada. In fact, they have to be presented when competing at IBJJF events like the Pan-Ams and Mundials. Below is a picture of Buckel’s own membership card, which I tool last year at the 2008 BJJ Mundials.

While the USBJJF hasn’t formalized such a policy yet here in the United States, it will surely be implemented at some point. So while it may not be mandatory yet, I think it would still be cool to say you were one of the first to be a member of the USBJJF.

So here’s how to volunteer and get your one year membership to the USBJJF:

  1. send an email to usjjfeventstaff@gmail.com and express your interest
  2. bring a passport photo this weekend that can be used in your membership card

They’ll have some quick paperwork there to get your membership underway!
